St. Nicholas comes from Nikolaos of Myra who was a saint and the Bishop of Myra. He was famous for working miracles and for putting coins in shoes that were left out for him.
At the beginning of the 19th Century, the Dutch in Nieuw Amsterdam (now New York) named him Santa Claus from the Dutch Sinterclass.
Many places in Europe (and some other countries) consider this to be the main day of the Christmas celebration and enjoy entertaining friends and family and exchanging gifts to show their love and care.
